GIFT OF THE SPIRIT
Today the gospel is full of beautiful images that speak richly of the gift of life. To live in the richness of life is for Jesus to live in the Kingdom. He uses some images of nature to illustrate this. I want to start with the second illustration.
MUSTARD SEED FOR INDIVIDUALS
Jesus says, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. Examples:
1. Flooded backyard that seems to be the build up over several days of leak in a pipe.
2. If you leave your electrical appliances on standby, over a long period of time you will have built up your bill significantly.
Jesus has used the mustard seed elsewhere to highlight faith. How encouraging. You just need the tiniest attitude of faithfulness to shape your life. And it will grow, and grow and grow into the largest shrub, for the birds of the air to nest in. In other words, bring blessing to others.
Faith could be described as a positive outlook toward the person or task at hand. Once you’ve got a scerrick, trust it and act on it and it will produce fruit and it will grow. In time, that regular positive attitude will shape your own attitude to life and influence those around you.
MUSTARD SEED FOR COMMUNITY
Another good point is to recall that the Kingdom is about community. Jesus said the Kingdom is among you. Where two or three are gathered together in my name there am I in the midst. If in our relationship with one another, there is just a mustard seed of life then it is enough to make a difference.
Faith, love, truthfulness all gifts of the spirit, grow very easily across communities.
Don’t forget, as small as a mustard seed is, there are millions of them. The more that approach life with just this ounce of life will produce a harvest. The kingdom is a communal experience and it grows through the smallest gesture of faith. The experience so often encourages others.
People of the kingdom trust one another and work with one another
THE GROWTH PATTERN
Lets return to the first illustration of the passage. Jesus says the kingdom is like a farmer who sows the seed, then goes to bed and it grows, first the stalk, then the bud, then the wheat.
Life is a gift. Its story will unfold irrespective of what or how we respond.
Creation is full of its mystery. It is constantly producing new stages of development.
We should never be surprised by the blessings it brings.
Always be expectant. Whatever life leads us through, the harvest will produce its fruit.
Have you ever felt small, perhaps insignificant in the context of the world and the many overwhelming stories of doom?
Don’t let yourself be deterred.
The media creates an external story. It doesn’t touch the heart or substance of life.
The real story of life dwells in the midst of the hearts and minds of the common people of faith.
This is the Kingdom of God, and that’s what we are called to live within.
One act of faith or as a communal gesture of goodwill is the mustard seed that will lead to the harvest God foretold would end up being 10 fold 50 fold, 100 fold.
